From the accommodationGerês hides natural treasures that take your breath away. Here are the must-sees to discover in the surroundings.
At 1100m altitude, Pitões das Júnias is one of the highest villages in Barroso and one of the most genuinely preserved in the National Park. Its granite houses, ancestral pace of life and warm inhabitants make it a destination in itself.
Not to be missed: the 4km circular trail leading to the ruins of Santa Maria das Júnias Monastery — the most isolated Cistercian monastery known, founded in the 9th century — and the viewpoint of the spectacular Pitões waterfall, one of the most beautiful in Gerês.
Suspended over a gorge of the Rabagão river, the Misarela Bridge is one of the most enigmatic places in Gerês. Built in the Middle Ages, its legend says it was erected by the Devil himself overnight to help a fleeing criminal.
Beyond the mystery, the place impresses with its surroundings: the moss-covered gorge, the sound of water and the rocks that create an atmosphere between the dramatic and the contemplative. A place one never forgets.
The village of Pincães is the starting point to discover one of Gerês's most beautiful waterfalls: Pincães Waterfall, accessible on foot in 20 minutes, with a crystal-clear lake perfect for swimming.
Nearby, the 7 Lakes of Xertelo trail (12km, more demanding) rewards with 7 successive waterfalls forming natural pools of blue and green waters. And for the most adventurous, Cela Cavalos Waterfall is one of the park's best-kept secrets.
A region where traditions are not just the past — they are the present of a community that lives and celebrates them.
